Is Berra everyone’s captain?

By: Graham | January 4th, 2008

Perhaps the most depressing image from Wednesday’s abject display at Tannadice was of Christophe Berra attempting to use some force to prevent Michael Stewart continuing his ‘conversation’ with the referee after his dismissal. Coupled with the earlier first half spat between the players and the rumours of less than incisive dressing room leadership, Berra suddenly had the look of a boy scout whose anticipated stint packing shopping for grannies at Morrisons had become an all-nighter as a bouncer at a Lothian Road lap-dancing joint.

Berra is an outstanding defender for his age and is undoubtedly destined for great things at Hearts and with Scotland but the question must be asked whether his appointment as team captain at such a young age was a result of Tynecastle politics rather than sound football sense.

Now, I realise that to suggest that Tynecastle might put politics ahead of football exposes me to ridicule, but I feel it’s a question that must be asked.

I’ve always thought Berra’s appointment as captain was a little fishy. Neilson is older, more experienced, and is obviously devoted to Hearts. Robbie would be my pick.
